Haskin Samuel Mendelevich (1909 — ?) — artist and political activist.

At the age of sixteen, Samuel Haskin became actively involved in the work of the left-wing section of the woodworkers’ trade union.

In 1926 he joined the Latvian Komsomol, and in 1931 became a member of the Communist Party.

He worked in the port, at sawmills, and in underground printing houses, and produced posters and political slogans.

In 1933 he organized a group of underground revolutionary artists in Latvia. He was arrested on numerous occasions for his political activities. In 1935, avoiding arrest, he left for Moscow.

In 1938 he was repressed by the NKVD and remained in the Far North until 1946.

In 1956 he was officially rehabilitated.

After his release he returned to Riga, where from 1947 to 1958 he worked as an artist for the newspapers “Cīņa” and “Dadzis.”
