Gurvich (Gurwitsch) Yosif (Josif) (4 August 1897, Grodno – 1941?) — lawyer, educator, civic activist.
Yosif Gurvich was born in Grodno to Hans Mortel and Feiga (née Feigenberg). During the First World War, he relocated to Riga. From 1917, he was active in the Tsirey Zion movement. He graduated in 1918 from the commercial school named after V. Olavs in Riga.
In the same year, he studied national economy at the Baltic Technical Higher School. From 1919 to 1925, he read law at the University of Latvia and was a member of the student Orthodox organisation Academic Centre. He also participated in Tsirey Agudat Yisrael. In 1925, he stood unsuccessfully for election to Riga City Council on their party list, and again in 1931 for the 4th Saeima.
During his studies, he taught at a primary school. Yosif Gurvich was among the founders of the Tora veDerekh Eretz gymnasium, where he also worked as a teacher. He served as assistant to the sworn attorney O. Finkelshtein in Riga. On 14 March 1934, he was appointed a sworn attorney in Riga.
He is believed to have perished during the German occupation in 1941.
