In 1925, Meri Gurvich completed 7 grades of primary school. From 1925 to 1940, she worked as a seamstress in the tailoring shops of Prezman, Galeykin, and Levius in Riga. In 1940–41, she was employed at the “Red October” cooperative. In 1941, she was evacuated to the Kazakh SSR, working as a seamstress at a production cooperative in the village of Kapal until 1944. In 1944–45, she worked at a bread factory in Almaty. In 1945, she returned to Riga. Until 1950, she was a seamstress at the “Veka” artel. From 1950 to 1953, she worked at a production plant in Riga’s Moscow district. From 1953 to 1966, she was employed at the “Briviba” artel (later renamed “Rīgas Apģērbs”). Since 1966, she has been retired.
In marriage to Solomon Gurvich (b. 1906, Daugavpils), she had two children: Hana Taic (née Gurvich, b. 1930, Riga) and Binyamin Gurvich (b. 1934, Riga). Her father, Leib Volk (b. 1878, Lithuania – d. 1946, USA), emigrated to the United States in 1920 in search of work. In the 1920s–30s, her mother Sara Volk (née Koblenz, b. 1890, Daugavpils), and siblings also emigrated to the US: Khaim (b. 1922), Samuil (b. 1902), Vikhna Segal (b. 1904), Leya Silver (b. 1912), Motel (b. 1914), Asne Sten (b. 1916), and Gesya Perl (b. 1920), all born in Daugavpils.
