Gurevich (Gurewitsch) Ruven (1881, Kharkov – 28 July 1944, Riga) — physician.
Ruven Gurevich graduated from Kharkov University in 1907. Until 1940, he practiced as a pediatrician and internist in Daugavpils, where he also directed a local polyclinic.
In July 1941, he was interned in the Daugavpils Ghetto. On 3 August 1941, he was among a group of ghetto prisoners being led by Nazi forces to the forest on the city’s outskirts for execution. Along the way, one of the guards recognized him as the doctor who had once saved his son’s life and helped him escape unnoticed. Gurevich witnessed the massacre and later recalled how “some Jews fought like lions, shielding their wives and children. I saw dozens of deceived Jews, even the wounded and bleeding, throwing themselves with bare hands and stones at the murderers…”
He was later hidden on a farm by his rescuer and eventually transported to Riga, believing that mass killings would be impossible in a large city. There, he was imprisoned in the Riga Ghetto and later transferred to the Kaiserwald concentration camp. During a bloody Aktion, he took his own life by ingesting poison.
