Gurevich (Gurewitsch) Isai Izrailevich (1912, Riga – 1992, Moscow) — physicist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1968).

Isai Gurevich graduated from Leningrad University in 1934. From 1934 to 1945, he worked at the Radium Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, and from 1945 at Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which later became the Kurchatov Institute.

He authored numerous works in nuclear physics, nuclear reactor theory, and particle physics. Along with M.I. Pevzner, he discovered the repulsion effect of nuclear energy levels. Gurevich proposed the hypothesis of phase transitions in nuclear matter and identified the phenomenon of double-frequency precession of muonium in a magnetic field.

He was awarded the Stalin Prize of the USSR in 1949 and the I.V. Kurchatov Gold Medal in 1980.

Selected works:

О возможности расщепления ядер нейтронами с эмиссией трех тяжелых частиц /On the Possibility of Nuclear Fission by Neutrons with the Emission of Three Heavy Particles/. Moscow, 1934.
