In 1963, he completed training at Training Combine No. 481, qualifying as a foreman locksmith-plumber. He subsequently worked as a plumber for Riga's RSE No. 2 (1963–1964), and then as a plumber for “Latkurortstroy” in Jūrmala (1964).
