In 1936 he undertook advanced training at the university clinic “Medical Center” in New York. From 20 October 1936 to 15 December 1939 he worked as a district physician in Madona district.

From 1940 to 1941 he served as an assistant physician at the Riga City Children’s Hospital. Simultaneously, he worked as director of the Riga House of Sanitary Education under the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Latvian SSR.

On 27 June 1941 he evacuated together with employees of the Latvian SSR Commissariat of Health to the Yaroslavl region, where he worked as a physician in a rural hospital until November 1941. He was later appointed head of the surgical department of a neurological and therapeutic hospital in Yaroslavl, serving there until April 1942.

In June 1942 he joined the Red Army and until the end of the war worked as head of the surgical department of an evacuation hospital, first in Yaroslavl and later in Riga. From October 1945 he headed the surgical office of the Special Polyclinic. Beginning in January 1946 he worked at the Riga City Children’s Clinical Hospital.
