Fomin Arkady Grigorievich (24 January 1946, Riga) - violinist-soloist, conductor, and chamber ensemble musician.
Arkady Fomin graduated from the Emīls Dārziņš Music School in 1964 (class of V. Sturestepa) and studied from 1964 to 1969 at the Latvian State Conservatory in the same class. From 1966 to 1970 he was a member of the Symphony Orchestra of Latvian Radio and Television (first violin section). After military service in 1970–1971, he performed in 1972–1973 with the orchestra of the Latvian Opera and Ballet Theatre and from 1971 to 1974 played in the Chamber Orchestra of the Latvian State Philharmonic.
He later emigrated to the United States, settling in Dallas, Texas, where he performed in a symphony orchestra and taught at the University of Texas. In 1976 he founded a string orchestra there. He was awarded the “Cowlishaw Artist-in-Residence Award” for artistic achievements and his contribution to the cultural life of Dallas. He became the founder and artistic director of the New Conservatory of Dallas, as well as artistic director of the “Music in the Mountains” conservatory in Durango, Colorado, and a visiting professor at the University of Colorado.
In 1984, on his initiative, a youth chamber orchestra was established in Dallas. He has performed as a violinist and conductor in the United States, Europe, Russia, and Japan, appearing with musicians such as Pinchas Zukerman, Yefim Bronfman, Eugene Drucker, Shlomo Mintz, Amihai Grosz, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and Steven de Groote. In 1989 he toured with his chamber orchestra in Riga, Leningrad, and Moscow, and he has frequently returned to Riga to perform as both violinist and conductor.
