Khaya Basina’s parents, Yakov Michelson (1859–1924, born in Bauska) and Ester Michelson (née Rozenthal) (1869–1934, born in Cēsis), lived in Gomel in 1920, where they were both buried.

Post-War Years in Riga

In 1946 Khaya Basina moved to Riga where she was a homemaker until 1962. In 1962–1964 she was a nurse at a kindergarten of the Latvian SSR Railway. In 1965–1967 she worked as a weighing clerk at Riga-Tovarnaya station.

Family and Emigration Attempts

Khaya Basina’s brother, Peisach Michelson (b. 1899), lived and worked in Birobidzhan, Primorsky Krai, in the 1960s. Her sister, Perla Shklyarskaya (née Michelson) (1897–1940), passed away in Skidel, Poland (now Grodno District, Belarus). Khaya took in her sister’s children.

In 1947, her sister’s daughter, Rochele Shulman (née Shklyarskaya) (b. 1934), moved to Poland and later emigrated to the USA.

Denied Emigration

In 1966 and 1969, Khaya was denied permission to emigrate to the USA due to inconsistencies in the information provided about her two brothers and two sisters, whom the Ministry of Internal Affairs claimed were living in the USA in the 1960s.
