Anders (Alperowitch) Edward Adolfovich
(Born 1926, Liepāja – is he still alive?)
Holocaust Witness, Professor of Chemistry
Edward's father, Adolf Anders, was a grain exporter, and his grandfather, Israel (born in Kurenets, Belarus – died 1934), was a gabbai of the main synagogue.
Edward and his mother, Erika (née Scheftelowitch-Levental), survived the Holocaust by passing Edward off as an abandoned Aryan child raised by Jewish parents. His father and 24 other relatives were murdered.
In 1944, Erika and Edward fled to Germany, and in 1949, they emigrated to America.
From 1955 to 1991, Edward Anders was a professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, specialising in the study of meteorites and lunar rocks.
After retirement, he reached out to a Holocaust survivors' organisation to help restore the names of those killed in Liepāja, but after receiving no support, he organised and funded the project himself.
