Abramovich Lev

Lev Abramovich was born in 1920 in Riga, Latvia, in a Zionist family that observed Jewish traditions. In 1933, he joined the organization “Ha-Shomer Ha-Tsa'ir” and engaged in fundraising for “Keren Ha-Kayyemet” and “Keren Ha-Yesod.”

In 1941, after the occupation of Latvia by Soviet troops, Lev Abramovich attempted, along with his sister Bela and brother Boris, to illegally reach the border between Turkmenistan and Iran to get to Eretz Israel. He was captured, sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by 5 years of exile. He served his sentence in “Vosturalag” in the eastern Urals. Released in 1956, Lev Abramovich returned to Riga and continued his persistent struggle against the Soviet authorities for permission to emigrate to Israel. He was only able to repatriate in 1972. His brother Boris died in prison.
