Zernitskaya Liya (1946)

Zernitskaya Liya Lvovna (b. 1 May 1946, Riga) — disinfector.

Liya Zernitskaya was the daughter of Fruma Zernitskaya (née Naishul, later Zakher) (b. 1911, Rezekne) and Lev Zernitsky (b. 1905, Rogachev).

She studied at the Faculty of Biology of the Latvian State University, completing four courses. In 1962 she worked as a sanitary worker at Riga Pharmacy No. 38; in 1963 as cashier at Riga Hairdressing Salon No. 128. In 1963, 1964 and from 1969 onwards she worked as disinfector at Branch No. 1 of the Riga Preventive Disinfection Office. In 1963–64 she was also cashier at Hairdressing Salon No. 99.

In 1967 she suffered a serious illness and until 1968 was treated at the Riga Psychiatric Hospital. She was registered as a Group II invalid from 1968. In 1971 she received permission to emigrate to Israel at the invitation of her father’s cousin, Zalman Yankelovich (b. 1909).
