Zande Mikhail Areevich (1918)

Zande Mikhail Areevich (13.01.1918, Riga) – employee.

Mikhail Zande was born into the family of Gershon-Arie Zande (1890, Poland – killed by the Nazis in 1941, Riga) and Sheina Borisovna Zande (1892, Plavinas – killed by the Nazis in 1941, Riga). He graduated from Riga Gymnasium (1936), worked at the “Baltic Wood” sawmill (1936–1941), was evacuated to Gorky (1941), and served in the Soviet Army, fighting near Moscow and on the North-Western Front (1941–1944). He was demobilised due to illness and moved to Alma-Ata, where he worked as an inspector for the Commissioner of Procurement for the Kazakh SSR (1944–1945), then for the Latvian SSR (1945–1946). He later served as director of a procurement office and a cooperative base of the Latvian Consumers’ Union (1946–1948).

In 1948 he was convicted, served his sentence in Murmansk, and was released under amnesty, with his record cleared (1948–1953). After returning to Riga, he worked as an expediter at the Latvian Consumers’ Union (1953), as foreman and workshop head in the Sadarbs artel (1954–1959), then as a worker at the Rigas Ekspresis plant (1959–1960). From 1960 to 1966 he was employed as a supply manager and engineer-economist at Assembly Directorate No. 74, and from 1967 to 1973 as senior engineer at the Jauda plant.

He married Ita Moiseevna Zande (née Parshova, b. 1923, Klikodai, Lithuania). They had two children: Rafail Mikhailovich Zande (b. 1945, Riga), son and Gizella Mikhailovna Zande (b. 1947, Riga), daughter

The marriage was dissolved in 1963. In 1964, his former wife and children emigrated to Israel.

Since 1963, he lived in a de facto, but not officially registered marriage with Mirjana Izrailevna Aleksandrova (née Gelfand, b. 1924, Riga).

In 1973, Mikhail Zande received permission to emigrate to Israel, where since 1971 his wife’s son Rudolf Aleksandrovich Aleksandrov (b. 1946, Riga) had been living.
