Zalkind Avraam (1870)

Zalkind Avraam (b. 1870, Mogilev) — doctor, public figure.

Avraam Zalkind graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Dorpat. From 1897 he practised medicine in Riga and was engaged in public activity. While still a student, he served as chairman of the Jewish Student Fund in Dorpat and was a member of the “Academic Society for Jewish Culture and Literature,” where he held the title of Philister. Immediately after Dr. Theodor Herzl’s manifesto, he founded the Zionist organisation Tsion in Riga, which later became legalised under the name Ivriya, and served as its chairman until the outbreak of the war.

In 1921 he was chairman of the Riga branch of Histadrut HaTzionit and a member of its Central Committee. He was one of the founders of the “Society of Jewish Physicians,” a long-time board member of Mefitsei Haskalah (until the First World War), a board member of Bikur Holim, and one of the co-founders of the “Bank of Jewish Intelligentsia.”
