In 1971 he received permission to emigrate to Israel, where his half-sister (on his father's side), Rabinovich (Shenkman) Khana Mikhailovna (1908, Vitebsk), had lived since 1945. His sister was visiting relatives in Minsk when the Great Patriotic War began. She first ended up in the Minsk ghetto, from where she was deported to Germany.
