Shapiro L.G (1887)

Shapiro L.G. (1887–?), political figure. In the Social Democratic movement from 1902; from 1903, member of the Riga organisation of the Bund, later worked at the Bund's Central Committee abroad. From 1906 — in St Petersburg, contributor to Bund periodicals, represented the St Petersburg Bund organisation at the 5th (London) Congress of the RSDLP. Author of works on the agrarian question (including the book “Municipalisation of Land, or Division into Property”). During the February Revolution of 1917, joined the RSDLP (Mensheviks); member of the Executive Committee of the Petrograd Soviet; in the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the 1st convocation, headed the department of local self-government; together with F.Ya. Kon, participated in editing the weekly “Samoupravlenie.” After October 1917, withdrew from active party work. From 1918 — in the RSFSR People's Commissariat of Education; from August, member of the RKP(b), delegate to the 9th Congress. In 1919–20, on political work in the RKKA. In 1920–21, member of the Presidium of Glavpolitprosvet. Then worked at the USSR People's Commissariat of Finance.
