In 1859 Aron-Eliyagu Pumpyansky graduated from the Vilna Rabbinical School. In 1860–61, together with A. S. Vol, he edited the Russian-language supplement to Ha-Karmel. In 1861–73 he served as community rabbi in Panevezhys, and in 1873–93 in Riga.

In 1882, under the pseudonym I. Geiman, he published the drama Solomon the Wise. In 1885 he issued in Vilna the collection Shirei Tsion (Songs of Zion), which included his own poems and poetic translations (including Lermontov’s Mtsyri).
He translated into Russian (with his own commentaries in Hebrew) the Psalms of David (1891) and the Proverbs of Solomon (1871).
