In 1917–20 he worked as a shoemaker–upper maker in Kuibyshev. In 1920 he moved to Riga and until 1940 worked as a shoemaker in private workshops. In 1941 he was evacuated to Alma-Ata and until 1945 worked as a night watchman in a kolkhoz.

In 1945 he returned to Riga and until 1964 worked as an upper maker at the “Erglis” footwear factory. From 1964 he was a pensioner.

His first marriage, to Sofia Levina (Fainovich) (1915, Daugavpils), was formally dissolved in 1963.

In his second marriage, to Sara Levina (née Mazo, formerly Vainer) (1911, Riga), a daughter was born: Marina Levina (1951, Riga).

His mother and his sister Tzipa Brandman (née Levina) (1903, Daugavpils – 1941(?)) perished in the Holocaust.

His brother David Levin (1908, Riga – …) fell in battle during the Second World War.

In 1969, Ber Levin received permission to emigrate to Israel at the invitation of his cousin Shushana Levin (1905, Daugavpils).
