In July 1941, he was drafted into the army and sent to the South-Western Front, serving as a senior sergeant in the medical service. His father was killed at the front, and his mother was murdered by the Nazis in Kyiv in 1941.

In 1942, during a battle near Kharkiv, Kleiman was wounded and removed from active military service. From July 1942 to July 1943, he served as head of the recreation club of Evacuation Hospital No. 3989 in Leninogorsk (Kazakhstan).

In 1943, he resumed his studies at the Kyiv Medical Institute, which at that time had been evacuated to Chelyabinsk. In 1944, together with the institute, he returned to Kyiv.

Upon graduating from the Kyiv Medical Institute in 1947, he was assigned to work in the Latvian SSR. He worked as an obstetrician-gynaecologist at the Ventspils Women’s Clinic, as well as inspector of the Ventspils City Health Department and later as head of the same department.

He was awarded the Order of Glory, 3rd Class, and the Medal “For the Victory over Germany.”
