David Gurovich was born in Riga to Borukh Davidovich Gurovich (1892, Sebezh, Vitebsk Province, Belarus) and Vikhna Mikhailovna Gurovich (née Arshon) (1894,Rezekne, or according to other sources, Riga – 1943, Orlovka, Kyrgyz SSR). He graduated from City Seven-Year School No. 9 in 1936 and completed vocational training in 1939. From 1940 to 1941, he worked as an assistant master at the Sarkanais Rīts factory in Riga.

In 1941, Gurovich was evacuated to the village of Orlovka in the Kyrgyz SSR, where he worked as a locksmith and apprentice in the tractor brigade of the Komintern collective farm (1941–1942). After moving to Frunze (now Bishkek), he became the manager of a fuel depot (1942–1945). Upon returning to Riga, he held various positions: foreman at the Vārpa accumulator plant (1945–1946), store manager for the Agricultural Cooperation Union (1946–1949) and Riga Municipal Food Trade (1949–1950), and team leader in a chemical workshop (1950–1951) and a sewing workshop at a district plant (1951–1959).

Due to health concerns, he moved to Gagra (Abkhazia), where he worked as a foreman in a haberdashery and sewing workshop at a vocational enterprise (1960–1962). Returning to Riga, he worked as a presser at the VEF factory (1962–1963), then as head of the supply department at the Zapryba construction and installation department (1963–1969).

In 1969, David Gurovich received permission to emigrate to Israel, where his sister Mikhlya Borisovna Hellerman (née Gurovich) (1925, Riga) was already living.
