When the Nazi Germany invaded, his family was evacuated to the Kirov region, to the town of Kotel’nich, where from the age of fourteen he worked in a state farm. In 1942 his father died of a heart attack, and shortly afterward his mother and sister Basya Meerovna (born 1925) also died. In 1945 he returned to Tukums, where he worked as a supply agent in the district consumer cooperative. In 1947 he was drafted into the Soviet Army, where he served until 1953.

From 1950 to 1963 he worked as a hauler, and from 1963 to 1970 as a timber hauler in the forestry enterprise (lespromkhoz) of Tukums. From 1970 he worked as a laborer at an industrial combine. He had two children: a daughter, Eva Yakovlevna Fleisher (born 1951), and a son, Misha Yakovlevich Fleisher (born 1954).
