Davis Jacob (pseudonim, real name Yakov Youphes)) (May 14, 1831, Riga – January 20, 1908, San Francisco) – tailor, inventor.

In 1854, Jacob Davis emigrated from the Russian Empire to America. He worked in various parts of America and Canada: in gold mines in British Columbia, in a brewery, and as the owner of a tobacco shop. In 1856, he moved to San Francisco and then to Viverville, where he worked as a tailor. In 1858, he moved from California to Canada, where he lived for eight years and married in 1865. His wife was Annie Parksher, an immigrant from Germany. The family had six children. In 1869, he opened his own sewing workshop in Reno, Nevada, where he made covers for wagons, tents, horse blankets, and later work clothes from durable fabric (canvas) purchased from Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco. At the end of 1870, when sewing work trousers, he used copper rivets, which were used in the manufacture of blankets, to strengthen the seams. This is how the first jeans appeared, which became one of the symbols of American clothing. Levi Strauss helped pay for the patent ($68) for the invention of trousers with rivets made of cotton fabric - denim: patent number 139/121, 20 May 1873. L. Strauss and J. Davis became partners, and Davis managed the company's jeans production until the end of his life.
